John 18:28-19:16a - Jesus before Pilate

1. In this passage, Jesus is brought before Pilate for crimes He is innocent of, and a great irony around authority unfolds, beginning in the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders. They've pursued Jesus to the death, yet now hesitate to enter Pilate's court, wary of Gentile impurity, as if their own hands are clean. 1. They shy away from directly condemning Christ, passing the burden onto Roman hands. Claiming authority to deem Christ guilty, but not in administering justice. 1. They choose to release Barabbas over Christ, twisting justice further, and exalting the guilty while the innocent are cast down. 1. Jesus embodies authentic kingship, and is mocked cruelly for it. The soldiers name Him "King of the Jews," unaware that their scorn echoes truth. A crown of thorns and a purple robe, meant to degrade our Lord, instead pointing to His real sovereignty. 1. Pilate claims a false authority over Christ, that Christ admonishes him for, reminding Pilate that, "You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above." Truth has now been so perverted and thoroughly questioned, that Pilate now questions "What is truth?", unable to see it standing before him. 1. Christ is King, yet not of an earthly realm, but of an eternal kingdom, which He soon establishes through the cross. In this moment, the world's judgment falters, yet Christ's quiet authority endures, soon to be revealed in the sacrifice of the King.

Conley's suggestion: In this passage, Jesus is taken before pilate, interrogated, and delivered for crucifixion. In particular, Pilate interrogates Jesus about his authority, the claim that he is King of the Jews. This section of Scripture highlights Christ's authority through irony. Christ's enemies claim a great authority, but all their supposed piety is hypocritical. Christ's authority is mocked, bit is indeed authentic.

  1. Regarding the Jews' hypocrisy
    1. They shed innocent blood and now are worried about coming near Gentiles.
    2. Refusing to take the matter into their own hands, but hand it over to the Romans
    3. …other things
  2. Regarding Christ's true kingship
    1. They literally call him king
    2. They mock with a crown of thorns
    3. They mock with a purple robe
    4. They replace him with Barrabas

Truth about authority is perverted. The Jews hypocritical authority raised up, the authentic authority of Christ cast down. It is so perverted that Pilate questions what truth even is. But Christ is truly king and his kingdom is not of this world which he will establish in the crucifixion.
