- With their Lord crucified, the disciples go back to do what they had done before they knew Christ, to work as fisherman.
- The men fish all night, failing to bring in a single fish, until Christ appears and instructs them to cast on the right side of the boat.
- The disciples pull in a great catch, and immediately John identifies the man who instructed them to be Christ their Lord.
- Sitting down with his disciples to eat, Christ uses the opportunity to ask Peter a critical question, "do you love me?"
- Jesus asks Peter 3 times whether or not he loves him, giving Peter an opportunity to repent of his previous 3 denials.
- Christ wished to publicly restore the apostle Peter, in order that all the apostles may fulfill the purpose set before them: to feed Christ's sheep in preaching and teaching to all men the gospel of saving faith.
- That Peter and the apostles may fulfill their duty as "Fishers of Men", and bring in a great bounty for Christ's eternal kingdom.
- We are partakers of this same promise and charge given to the apostles. We may not have the same authority that these men were given, but we are called still to love Christ and bring in the bounty of believers by the preaching and teaching of the word.
