- In the previous chapter, Paul gave instruction on how "stronger" brothers should interact with their "weaker" brethren, especially focusing on the general distinctions found between Jewish and Gentile believers. Now, Paul continues to exhort the stronger brother in fulfilling his responsibility to the weaker, with general encouragement given to all believers to work towards harmony as the bride of Christ.
- (v. 1\) The stronger has an obligation to bear with the weaker
- This obligation does not mean the stronger should turn a blind eye to sin, but does require a greater abundance of the fruit of patience from the stronger in avoiding offense of the weaker
- (vv. 2, 5-6) For the uniting bond between believers is the gospel of Christ, to the glory of God.
- (v. 14\) However, there is a duty here as well, for the stronger to pray for and exhort the weaker to greater understanding of the word, and in turn, a greater knowledge of how their liberty is applied
- (v. 8\) The example of Christ in bearing with the precepts of the law was not only necessary unto fulfillment of it, but was also meant so the gospel could be given to the Jewish people
- The presence of the stronger and weaker brother can be understood as typical of the Gentile and Jewish distinction
- As we see God embracing His elect, found in different states of understanding and practice, we should more greatly appreciate how God has saved "all" people, as in "all kinds" of people, through the gospel of Christ
- (vv. 15, 19-20) Let that appreciation drive us to action, for as the apostle repeatedly states that his ministry was to the gospel of Christ, let us mimic him and set our eyes solely upon that gospel given to us
